It’s not a secret that science fiction is sometimes the precursor of real live inventions that changed the world forever. Ideas like the submarine or the rocket have been a part of people’s imagination thanks to the genius mind Jules Verne decades before they were actually invented. It doesn’t end with him, however, as science fiction still acts as a prophecy. The more time passes, the more we see that what starts as a simple mental image, impossible to create in the real world ends up drastically changing the way we live. Here is the next trend of Sci-Fi inspired technologies about to revolutionize the world once more in the not-too-distant future.
#3. The Ultrasonic Screwdriver
If you’ve ever watched an episode of “Dr. Who” (and odds are you have) then you are familiar with his trusty “futuristic Swiss Army knife” – the ultrasonic screwdriver. He can use it for pretty much everything the plot requires of him which takes the phrase “plot convenience” to a whole new level. However, we are not here to talk about our favourite Time Lord; we are here to talk about his screwdriver. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, what seems like just another story-telling gimmick is actually a prototype in development. The Bristol University Professor of Ultrasonics, Bruce Drinkwater, is working with his colleagues from the university and engineers from The Big Bang: UK Young Scientists and Engineers Fair in order to finally give us the ultimate DYI contraption. Ultrasonics is not anything new and Prof. Drinkwater thinks that we are not too far off from carrying a device that will allow us to manipulate small objects, in our back pockets. The real-life applications of such a device would be countless.
Time travel might still take us a while to develop.
#2. The Google Glass
A lot has been said about Google‘s new idea of a portable computing and connectivity device and there is indeed a lot of controversy directly linked to the privacy ramifications the technology can bring. Even today people can record conversations and make photos and videos of other people without them knowing. What Google Glass can do is make this infinitely easier. However, we can’t deny the fact that, privacy issues aside, it would significantly modify the way we use the Internet today and whether we like it or not, it’s probably going to happen. It will be the next step to entering a brave new world.
Hopefully it won’t look so weird once it enters the mainstream.
#1. The Driverless Cars
While we are still on the subject of Google drastically changing the way we live, let’s talk about their driverless cars. The idea is not new but it’s being heavily worked upon and there are already a working prototypes. In fact, the models have already been tested on the road and Google has announced the cars have completed over 500, 000 km of autonomous driving accident free. That isn’t to say there have never been accidents in the history of the project, however. So far two accidents involving the driverless automobiles have been reported – the first one involves a one of the project’s vehicles being rear-ended while stopping at a traffic light. The second one was more serious and the first crash involving one of Google’s cars. It has been reported, however, that the vehicle was being driven manually when the accident occurred. The project is very promising and it’s not far-fetched to say that driverless vehicles will become a part of our everyday lives in the foreseeable future.
We live in interesting times that are about to get even more interesting. We are witnessing rampant technological development changing the world before our very eyes and it’s happening faster than ever before. In fact, it’s occurring at such a pace that we can’t really say what the future holds for us. Whatever it is, it’s bound to change the way we live, once again.
