Bird Flu – Prevention Still the Best Medication

The Bird Flu H5N1 strain is what the health officials are all worried about right now. The devastating effect of the virus towards birds on such a short notice is what worries the health officials. They worry that because of the properties of flu virus to mutate, they might be able to transfer to mutants. Then cause the same devastating effects.

Currently there is a drug that can help cure a person infected with the H5N1 strain. The Tami flu drug is manufactured by a French Vaccine maker. When the H5N1 strain becomes a global outbreak and considering how quickly it infects, there might be not enough medicine to counter it.

The threat of the bird flu virus becomes a threat to humans when it joins with a human flu virus. The best way to stop this threat from actually happening is through proper prevention. Here are some of the ways health officials have prevented further outbreak of the Bird flu virus spreading.

The first line of defence considered by WHO is burning or burying alive the whole flock of infected birds. This practice has since been done since the discovery of the virus on 1997. A lot of birds were destroyed and some of the affected farms were even quarantined.

Some nations that have been greatly affected have become stricter with their surveillance measures towards birds. They take steps to prevent smuggling exotic birds or any bird for that matter. This is because the bird being smuggled might carry the disease, especially exotic ones. They then quarantine the bird or birds until proven healthy. To make it safer, the poultry farmers who have handled some birds must always disinfect their boots and the tires.

Other prevention methods of countries have banned importation of birds form countries that have birds that carry the virus. In the United States alone, the CDC has banned importation of poultry from Asian countries that have been hit. If you are a frequent traveller and by chance travelled to a place where Bird Flu has hit, here are some preventive measures. Avoid going to rural places where they raise poultry. Avoid those farms if possible, if you do go to those farms, avoid going near to the birds there.

Open-air markets are the best breeding grounds of disease because of the warm and wet environment. The disease might affect persons with very weak tolerance levels. One of the best ways to keep infection away is to keep your hands sanitized at all times. This tip is not only for the H5N1 strain but for all kinds of virus. Wash your hands when coming in contact with poultry. You may also want to buy and bring an alcohol sanitizer.

Kids have weaker immune system. Watch your kids well and prevent them form putting their hands form their mouth. Also try to keep the kids away from birds. Eggshells are contaminated with bird droppings. So try to stay clear of foods that have raw eggs. The shells of those contaminated birds might have infected the raw eggs. But this is very unlikely to happen. When you travel, get a flu shot. This flu shot does not protect you from Bird Flu. It just reduces the chance of the bird flu joining with a human flu you might develop.

There are still no human cases that have been associated with eating infected poultry. A scary incident though is that a pack of frozen duck has been found with the virus. The heat can destroy the virus, so the bird flu coming from food eaten is not much concern. However precaution is still important.

Wash the utensils that have come into contact with the raw poultry. Also remember to wash your hands well after handling the raw poultry. Then cook the chicken very well. The best way to cook it is make the internal juices dry out and have an internal temperature of 180 degrees Fahrenheit.
