With change in technology in everything televisions have also come a long way from Standard Televisions to High Definition Television also called as HDTV. But still when it comes to choose one unit then people still have difficulty in choosing one. The big question that arises is what is the major difference between in HDTV and 1080p?
HD broadcasts are of two types – 1080i and 720p. These use the resolution of 1280 x 720 or composition of picture of 720 pixels height and 1280 pixels width. The p actually denotes the progressive scan in 720p. The progressive scan just means that the picture is not interlaced similar to the 1080i standard display. The term actually denotes the widescreen ration .i.e. 16:9 and implication of horizontal resolutions of 1920 pixels. These resolutions are similar to 2K digital technology of cinema. The implication of frame rate after the p letter in 1080p30 is specified. This simply means that there are 30 progressive frames per second. In 1080p there are no broadcasts and there is no expectation in coming time. But there are digital formats which may produce original 1080p signal. Some great examples of this are HD and Blu-Ray DVD players.
The i here denotes interlaced and it makes a big difference in 1080p because p denotes progressive scan. 16:9 is the widescreen ratio of the 1080i and it implies frame size of about 1920 x 1080 pixels. The countries like United States, Canada, Japan and Brazil which have been using system M as the television broadcaster in which the field rate of “i” is about 60 Hz. Otherwise it is 50 Hz for the countries that used the television system of 25 frames per rate. Both these variants could be carried with many digital television transmission formats for example ATSC and DVB.
Difference between 1080i and 1080p:
Some features that could offer are the differences between 1080i and 1080p. The features they offer are different from one another. 1080p shows clear mode videos than 1080i. 1080p can only display HD DVD and Blu-Ray in its full resolution and native formats. Many models are also available with many support modes whereas 1080i is a broadcast or video mode.

- 1080i means interlaced scanning and its aspect ratio is about 16:9. Therefore the full resolution is about 1920 x 1080- horizontally 1920 pixels and vertically 1080 pixels.
- When it is denoted as 1080p30 which means 1920×1080 resolutions with progressive scanning and whose frame rate is about 30.
- Interlaced scanning was used earlier and now commonly used is the progressive scanning.
Choosing one best television is not as difficult as it is thought but it is also not that easy. One must know few things like difference between 1080i and p. Having knowledge regarding all this would help you take the decision and choosing the best TV for you.
However if you want high picture quality from HD DVD or Blu-Ray then you need 1080p. It is also needed for video editing. 1080i is used for normal usage if you compare with prices.
