The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 is a class of its own. However before you consider going for the Note 2 one should check out the 3 alternatives given below

1. Samsung Galaxy S3

2. Sony Xperia ZL

3. LG Optimus G E975

Let us check out the features so that you can make an informed choice.

Processor, Memory and Storage Space

The Note II runs on the fastest processor which is at 1.6 GHz. Optimus G and Xperia ZL come quite near running at 1.5 GHz. Samsung S3 which is a 2012 release runs on a 1.4 GHz processor. All the phones have 2 GB RAM except Samsung S3 which has 1 GB RAM.  Sony has an internal 16 GB storage but can be extended to 64 using micro SD Card. The Optimus comes with a 32 GB Storage that cannot be extended. The S3 and the Note II can be extended to 32 GB and 64 GB respectively. Both LG and Sony provide strong competition to the Note II in this category.

Nothing to beat the 5.5 inch AMOLED display on the Note II. The Samsung S3 has the same technology except that it is smaller than the Note II. The LG Optimus G has a True HD IPS LCD display whereas the Sony Xperia ZL has a TFT screen. They have a better resolution @ 318 and 441 ppi compared to 250 ppi AMOLED displays on the Samsung phones. The Sony Xperia ZL scores over the rest in this department provided you overlook the bright experience on the AMOLED displays.

The LG Optimus G is the thinnest of the lot at 8.5 mm. The Samsung S3 is the lightest at 112 gm but then it has a lowly 2100 mAh battery. The 151 mm long Note II is heaviest at 183 gm weighed along with the S Pen. The Sony Xperia has a unique design with a carbon fiber body. The LG Optimus G too comes with an elegant design. The Samsung phones are a class of their own although they have plastic bodies. It’s difficult to choose a winner here although the LG Optimus G comes out best in the looks and feel category. The LG Optimus  G price in India makes this an attractive buy.

The LG and Sony devices have a cool 13 mp cameras. The best in their class – the phones come with auto focus, image stabilization and an LED Flash. The cameras support HDR, face detection and Geo-tagging as most recent smart phones cameras do. The Samsung Note II goes down a notch here with an 8 mp Camera but matches other software features. Samsung S3 falls back here understandably with a 5 mp camera and not so smart features.

The LG and the Sony are powered by around 2000 mAh batteries and promise good talk time. The Note II has a higher rated battery at 3100 mAh as it has to drive the huge AMOLED display. The S3 has the smallest capacity with a 1500 mAh battery. However its talk time is comparable to the others. The Note II has the best talk time though.
